Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find out which credits will transfer to WSU? You can look at the Transfer Credit Equivalency Guide website. If your classes are not listed or you need additional information, please email the Transfer Center or call us at 509-335-6000, Toll Free 888-978-7252.
How/where do I find out about my non-general education requirements and how do they apply towards my degree? Your WSU academic advisor has copies of your transfer transcripts and the Transfer Credit Report (TCR), which is an evaluation of your transfer work. Your advisor should be able to explain what credits transferred as GERs and elective credit. Also, check the WSU On-Line Catalog for links to academic program regulations. If you still have questions about your transfer work, contact the Transfer Center at 509-335-6000 or Toll Free 888-978-7252 for further assistance.
What if I am still undecided on a major or career? Undecided students will be assigned an advisor in the Transfer Center. Your advisor will assist you in exploring academic options to help you focus on a particular major. A career counselor can help you identify career options for academic programs of interest for you.
How do I find out about departmental requirements to certify a major? You can start by referring to WSU's On-Line Catalog. The best way to find out about department major requirements is to go directly to the department, ask for a major checksheet, and speak with a department representative.
When do I need to be certified in a major? You can certify most majors after accumulating 24 semester credits and attaining a 2.0 grade point average. However, some departments require selective courses and grade point averages. You can get certification information from the Center for Advising and Career Development or contact the specific department in question.
You must certify into a major upon completion of 60 hours of credits. Transfer students who enter with more than 60 hours of credits are allowed one additional semester to certify a major.
Is it possible to change advisors? If so, how? Yes. If you change your area of interest and/or major go to Center for Advising and Career Development to get an advisor assignment in your new interest area. If you are confident about your new area of interest and/or major and are eligible to certify you can change your major in the department, or the Center for Advising and Career Development staff can help you with the process.
What are the Writing Portfolio requirements? Students must complete the portfolio no later than the end of the first semester after completing 60 credit hours. If you started your post secondary education at a WSU accredited institution during fall semester 1991 or later, you must complete the writing portfolio requirement. Students must submit three writing samples from classwork and write two essays during a proctored session.
Transfer students who have not completed their entry level writing requirement (English 101 or equivalent) must complete the writing placement exam. The writing exam consists of two essays completed over a two-hour period. Students must also complete two writing-in-the-major courses. Further information on the portfolio requirements and test dates can be obtained by contacting the WSU Writing Assessment Office in CUE 303, 509-335-7959.
If I need help with coursework, from whom do I get help? Always consider talking with your course instructor or teaching assistant about getting help in a course. Beyond that, tutoring for many courses is available at the Center for Advising and Career Development. In addition, the Center for Advising and Career Development offers helpful sources of information and workshops that cover learning strategies and academic assistance across the campus.
